2009

A new initiative of the Group for Caribbean writers in the Netherlands is to make portraits of Caribbean writers. The Group has decided to annually commission an aspiring, talented artist from the Caribbean to create a portrait of a writer or poet from Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles or Aruba. The artists are entirely free to shape their commission as they like.
The first one to get the first commission is Curacao born visual artist Tirzo Martha. He was asked to make a portrait of the poet / writer Ellis Juliana. He made his artwork in the months May to August 2009 and gave it the title Proteha e Wardador [Protect the Protector].
The sculpture will be placed at the public library of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
